Being a creative business owner, I’m often asked why I chose to move our office from downtown Edmonton to Sherwood Park nearly 7 years ago. Did I feel that there was a need in the market? Was it a cost thing? Did I lose my mind? What was the deal? In short, it was a combination of a lot of things. People are often boggled as to how we can exist where we do. The answer is simple- with technology, the world is incredibly small and we’re able to work with clients everywhere with ease.
A huge pet peeve of mine is the common misconception that creative talent and people only exist in major centers. For some reason people think that great design only comes out of New York, Paris, Toronto, or Vancouver. It would be preposterous to think that great designers, photographers, programmers, and creatives can actually exist outside of those areas.
Our office isn’t in a major center or even a downtown and yet, we have a fantastic group of highly creative people. How can this be? The simple fact is that good designers, and creative people are all around us. Everyday they are born into the world and actually walk among us. There is no special formula for creating them or postal code that they are only allowed to exist in. They just are.
It’s not always city skylines, trendy areas, or coffee shops that inspire us. The fact is that we’re all different and our inspiration is just as unique. Yes, it can be those things, but it can also be our families, friends, movies, cars, architecture, music, other design, sports, people, video games, etc.- You just never know.
The fact is that creativity is all around us. It’s a way of thinking, dreaming, living, playing and just being. It’s not a destination.
