Come June 11th, If you have Google Maps on your website you’re going to have to give Google permission to bill you.
Recently Google announced that they are changing the entire Google Maps feature. Below are the two main changes you’ll see from Google Maps this time around, and what you’re going to have to change as a result.
1. Google Maps is turning into Google Maps Platform
The new Google Maps Platform streamlines Google’s 18 old Maps APIs into three new core products:
- Maps, which allows developers to add static and dynamic maps on websites
- Routes, which provides directions and traffic updates
- Places, which provides information on the map for stores, restaurants, and other locations
Lots of websites use these features to help people find and visit their businesses.
2. Google’s changing the Maps pricing plans
Google has changed their pricing plan to be pay-as-you-to, rather than the Standard and Premium plans they had before. But that means EVERYone will need to sign up for this new pricing.
If you’re not currently paying to have Maps on your website, don’t worry. You probably still won’t have to pay. Google will give everyone $200 of free monthly usage for the Maps core products, which is plenty for most websites.
Even though you likely aren’t going to pay for this service, you will be required to setup your own Google account and provide billing information. That way, if you go over your free $200/month, you won’t have a disruption in service.
Here’s what you need to know
Google is promising to bring simplicity and improved user experience and features with the new platform. The good news is that these changes won’t affect the code for your site. However, as of June 11th, Google will require billing information to be attached to your account. This means that if KEEN or any other web developer made your website, you’ll probably need to create your own Google Account for your website.
Here’s what you need to do
- If you have a website that has a Google map plugin, check in with your website developer
– If you’re a KEEN Creative client, don’t worry, we’ll be contacting you 😉
- Check that you have a Google account. If not, sign up
- Attach your billing information
- Regularly monitor your usage to make sure you’re not going over
- Make sure your entire site, not just Maps is updated
